Fruit Flies Begone!!

Yes, I’m a DIY girl.  But never did it cross my mind to add DIY fruit fly killer to my “things I can do” list.

I hate bugs.  H.A.T.E.  Of course I tell my kids “hate” is not a nice word, but they don’t read my blog, so I’m not caring today. For whatever reason, the fruit flies have gotten out of hand in my house. They are multiplying in front of my very eyes. And unfortunately for me, I have several “floaters” in my eyes, so what I’m batting at may or may not be the real flies. It makes for some funny looks from the rest of my family, let me tell ya. 😉

So I did what any DIY-er with a question would do. I Googled.  “How to get rid of fruit flies” I asked. The answers ranged from you’re S.O.L to just pack up and move. (I’m exaggerating just a wee bit.)

I choose to go with the humane way… drowning in apple cider vinegar and dish soap. (not me, the fruit flies.)  And to my amusement and slight disbelief, it worked!  I giggled!  I love it when simple things work.

Just 2 ingredients… Apple Cider Vinegar and dish soap.

No measuring.  Just a couple squirts of liquid dish soap and a little bit of cider.  Cover with plastic wrap and secure with a rubber band. Then use a fork to poke holes in the top.  The little buggers can get in, but they can’t get out.

I have two glasses set out on opposite sides of the kitchen.

Bye-bye fruit flies!

Gross picture, but see??  It works!  I caught 10 in one glass in just a day.  I still have more ‘cuz they are pesky, but I have no fear.  I am now the DIY Fruit Fly Slayer! 😀

  1. You had me cracking up with this post! I have awful problems with fruit flies every summer and I tried the vinegar and soap and had moderate success, but I tried something I saw on Pinterest last summer and I swear you will almost wipe them out in a day. Here’s the pin:

A small piece of banana works the best, I’ve found. I’ve gotten at least 10 in an hour or two! Try it and tell me what you think 🙂

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the post! 😀 Thanks for the banana idea. I’m going to try that right now! Still catching those little buggers, but I see them flying around too. Have a great weekend Kristen!

  2. Q – Will try this! Great idea. Made me laugh remembering when we had an out of control fruit fly problem. I put all of the fruit in the refrigerator. Scrubbed the sink, counters, floor, etc. STILL had fruit flies all around. For some reason, I opened a small cabinet door which held stuff not often used. YUCK! Fruit fly attack! Turns out my daughter, Sarah, had hidden a plum in there so her sibling wouldn’t eat it, then she promptly forgot about it. LOL! Mystery solved.
